Farmingville, NY — Frederick C. Braun, Chairman of the Town of Brookhaven Industrial Development Agency (IDA), announced that the IDA has closed on a package of economic development incentives for a proposed affordable rental apartment complex for adults 55-plus in Medford.
The IDA closed on the benefits package with Medford Gardens HDFC on November 22, 2024 after approving the incentives at a meeting on Oct. 23, 2023.
Medford Gardens, a 67-unit complex owned by New York City and Long Island-based not-for-profit social services agency WellLife Network. Until 12 years ago, WellLife, which offers services at 80 locations, including substance use disorder clinics, community outreach programs and residential facilities, across New York City and Long Island, was known as PSCH/Pederson-Krag. It also offers programs for those with intellectual/developmental disabilities and for mental health challenges.
The 69,000-square-foot project to be built on 6.8 acres on Horseblock Road, near Eagle Avenue will have 10 studios and 56 one-bedroom units. Units are set aside for those who need support services. Supportive housing combines affordable housing with support services that help people who face complex life challenges
The Town approved change of zone for the project in 2022. The $38 million project will create 120 construction jobs and 7 full-time-equivalent permanent positions.
Medford Gardens will offer seniors with disabilities housing and supportive services.
New York State is providing $7.9 million in grants for the project.
“The IDA’s support of this project will, among other things, help to transform the lives of our seniors in need of support, giving them a place they can call home,” said Braun.
