Brookhaven IDA closes on expansion of pharmaceutical maker American Regent

12/27/21

FARMINGVILLE, NY  (December 27, 2021) — Frederick C. Braun III, Chairman of the Town of Brookhaven Industrial Development  Agency (IDA), announced that the Agency has closed on an economic development package that will keep a major pharmaceutical maker and hundreds of jobs in Shirley.

The IDA closed on the agreement on December 27  with American Regent Inc., which intends to build and equip an approximately 18,000-square-foot addition to its existing 94,876-square-foot manufacturing plant at 5 Ramsay Rd., Shirley. It also intends to renovate about 37,650 square feet in the existing building, one of two it owns at the site. The IDA board approved the incentives on June 30.

American Regent, formerly known as Luitpold Pharmaceuticals, is a subsidiary of Japan’s Daiichi Sankyo Inc. that manufactures generic and branded injectable pharmaceuticals and IV iron therapies. It is undertaking the $68 million project to modernize its facilities as part of a commitment to the Food and Drug Administration. The company, which has annual sales in excess of $1 billion, had considered moving the operations and 375 jobs with average annual salaries of $70,000 to Ohio, where it has other facilities.

The incentive package included a PILOT agreement, mortgage recording tax abatement and sales tax abatement necessary for American Regent to remain and grow in the Town of Brookhaven.

The Shirley plants were built in the 1980s with assistance from the IDA. The new addition and renovations are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2023.

“In assisting this project, the Brookhaven IDA is helping to keep a long-time Brookhaven Town business in Shirley and retain hundreds of good paying jobs for our residents”, said Braun. “Retaining companies like American Regent is essential if we are to keep the Brookhaven economy competitive and moving forward.”
